Dr. Alesha Logan

Assistant Professor, Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioner Program, IWU-National & Global

First impressions can either dent or mold you. For Alesha Logan, when she was applying to become a faculty member in IWU’s primary nurse practitioner program, her first impression of IWU became a foundation from which she could thrive personally, professionally, and spiritually.

“When I interviewed, I was nine months pregnant. From Dr. Wright to the Chancellor, everybody was so accommodating to me in the onboarding process. It made me think, ‘This is the kind of organization that I want to be a part of.’” Alesha said.

Having previously worked in secular settings, Alesha was eager for the opportunity to share her faith openly with her colleagues and students. She even she found herself challenged to develop and strengthen her own faith.

“Before working at IWU, I used to be very private about my faith. I knew what I believed, but I was very reserved in those beliefs. In this role, I feel like I’ve been given a license to share the gospel, and now you can’t shut me up,” Alesha said. “I infuse Jesus into everything now. In every meeting, we open with prayer; there are weekly devotions and prayer in my classes.”

Above all, her passion comes from a place of genuine care. At the center of her teaching philosophy is a desire to serve her students with empathy. “My pastor quoted John Maxwell, ‘People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.’ While I hold my students to certain standards, I also respect them. I am here to serve them, and that might mean sitting with them and praying before talking about an assignment.”

Alesha has 100-120 students pass through her classroom each year. Beyond teaching them essential nursing skills, Alesha views her classes as a unique ministry opportunity.

“I may never have the chance to meet that many people as I pass through life and just share the gospel with them. But in this role, I have these students’ undivided attention. I have the chance to uninhibitedly share Christ in a bold manner and I need to take advantage of this opportunity. Above all else, this has really pushed me to grow,” Alesha said.

Logan holds a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Indianapolis, and is board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University, and an Associate of Science in Nursing from Isothermal Community College. She is currently working toward her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Alabama-Huntsville, with a focus in obesity programs in faith-based communities.
